Akela Franklin is a classical soprano, teaching artist, children’s theatre director, and arts administrator based in Boston, MA. She has appeared in numerous operatic and musical theatre stage productions in the last 10 years and has received extensive dramatic training from distinguished directors throughout the United States. While attending Longy School of Music for her M.M. in voice performance, Akela studied acting techniques for singers under the tutelage of Greg Smucker, artistic director of Boston Opera Collaborative.
Akela first began teaching children’s theater in 2019 at Children’s Music Center of Jamaica Plain, where she directed musical adaptations of Stone Soup and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. She recently taught an online musical theatre course for Community Music Center of Boston’s (CMCB) Elementary Music department in which students participated in a fabulous virtual musical revue finale. This summer at YoFES, Akela is excited to dive into her first experience teaching theatrical improvisation and looks forward to helping her students explore the power and brilliance of their own imaginations.
In addition to teaching theatre for YoFES, Akela serves the organization through her work as an executive assistant, private voice teacher, and as the manager of Youth Builders Summer Camp 2020.
